I am so sorry. Günther, you were a great researcher and an inspiration for me. I first met you when you visited me in Italy. I am grateful to have collaborated with you since then. Rest in peace.

Arash Niknafs, 05.06.2023 - 19:02 Uhr

Usually there is not that many people or events that make significant changes in one's life. Dr. Ruhe is one of those very few who had huge positive life-changing impact in my life. I always referred to him as a true gentleman when asked who my PhD supervisor is. You will be always remembered as a wonderful human being.

Mea Wang, 02.06.2023 - 19:44 Uhr

It was always so pleasant to talk and work with Gunther. He will be truly missed by us. Please accept my deep condolences.

Dan, 02.06.2023 - 04:11 Uhr

Günther was an excellent and much appreciated researcher from our Requirements Engineering (RE) community. He had many contributions related to release planning, empirical software engineering, data-driven requirements engineering, and decision support. He was also Editor-in-Chief of Information and Software Technology. I have had the chance of working with him since the end of 2016 on the organization of the RE Conference in Banff (2018) and on the RE Steering Committee ever since. Günther was passionate, constructive, and effective. I quickly learned to appreciate his sense of humor and his love of life. Working with him was a real joy; celebrating with him as well. He will be deeply missed by his colleagues, friends, and students.

My sincere condolences to Melanie, Erika, Stella, and the whole family.

Auf Wiedersehen, Lieber Günther.

I worked with Guenther in the Department of Computer Science. I enjoyed our conversations over the years. I was shocked to hear of his passing. He will be missed dearly. My condolences to his family.

Vaarun Vijairaghavan, 31.05.2023 - 16:16 Uhr

I will miss Guenther's smile, and the ease with which he went about the important work that he undertook. He taught us all how to create a research culture that is respectful, provides opportunities for talent to shine, and contributes to society.

Barrie Nault, 31.05.2023 - 01:38 Uhr

It is with great sadness and thoughts for Guenther's family that I learned about his passing. Guenther was one of the first colleagues I met at the UofC in 2001 and we have been friends ever since. He courses were ones that I always sent our PhD students to take in large part because I wanted them to know Guenther - very clever, very humble, and very personable. He helped numerous colleagues including me, and like many academic relations, friendship transcended the actual work. He leaves a large hole in the lives of all who knew him and none more than his immediate family. My deepest condolences.

rest in peace.

What I remember most about Guenther was how calm, cool and unflappable he seemed. He always had a positive outlook and a kind word whenever I spoke with him. I especially remember a long chat about good things to do in Kaiserslautern, sharing our experiences in that city. We'll all miss him!

Cas and Ross Jeffery, 01.05.2023 - 00:29 Uhr

How sad to hear of the passing of a good friend, teacher, and researcher. We have lots of fond memories of our times together in Germany and Canada, sharing a meal, discussing research, enjoying Guenther’s company. He will be greatly missed by many in the academic community.

Dietmar & Ute, 30.04.2023 - 10:39 Uhr

I first met Günther in 1995 professionally when I was still with Siemens Corporate Research in Munich. From then on, our professional relationship continued first at Fraunhofer IESE in Kaiserslautern and then at the University of Calgary in Canada. In those early years, the professional relationship turned into a friendship. My wife Ute and I will never forget the hospitality we enjoyed with him and his spouse in Calgary, as well as the joint hiking tours in the Rockies and the barbecues at the Elbow River. We last met Günther and his spouse together during a conference in Tallinn in 2019. His sudden illness and premature death came as a shock to us.

Ute and I will remember Günther as a warm-hearted, open-minded man who always had a positive attitude to life.

Our sincere condolences go to his family and all his loved ones.

Mark Przepiora, 29.04.2023 - 22:13 Uhr

I knew Guenther since the time in 2006 when he supervised my undergraduate summer research internship at the University of Calgary. Later he supervised my Master’s research, and afterwards I continued to keep in touch with him and collaborate with him on his projects. It’s impossible to exaggerate how supportive, generous, and kind he was to me over the years. I’m heartbroken to learn of his passing. My heart goes out to all of his loved ones, and to everyone who has been touched by his presence over the years.

Frank & Claudia Maurer, 25.04.2023 - 13:57 Uhr

I knew Guenther from Kaiserslautern and helped attract him to Canada. We were long time colleagues working in the same area until my work shifted to other research. Guenther was always helpful and supportive. I liked his positive attitude towards students in exams and defences.
While I heard of some medical issue, his passing is sudden, surprising and quite a shock.
Guenther will be missed and remembered.
Our sincere condolences to all his loved ones.

Usman Alim, 24.04.2023 - 23:01 Uhr

As a new hire at UCalgary, I was a member of an academic committee that Günther chaired. He showed me what professionalism is all about and those lessons will stay with me throughout my career.

Mahmood Moussavi, 24.04.2023 - 18:02 Uhr

Guenther was a long-time colleague and friend of mine. I had the pleasure of several collaborations in research and other scholarly activities with him. I believe this is a huge loss for our software engineering program, department, and faculty.

Guenther, you were a beacon of light and impacted the lives of many. You will be missed.

Tejash Shrestha, 23.04.2023 - 19:56 Uhr

We shall deeply miss you, Dr. Ruhe. You welcomed me to your lab with a smile and hope that we would travel the mountains of Nepal together. I am honored to be one of your students.

I shall remember you as always smiling, dedicated and understanding mentor. A Guru who could see a person's underneath talent and traits and help them in the easiest ways. May your soul rest in peace.

My condolences to the family and everyone who knew him.

Ehud Sharlin, 23.04.2023 - 19:51 Uhr

I knew Günther as a wonderful and kind colleague, always willing to help, always positive, always smiling...
His loss is sudden, and very painful. Please know that Günther, with his kindness, humanity and wisdom, touched many lives here at the University of Calgary. He will be sorely missed.

Lorenzo De Carli, 23.04.2023 - 19:42 Uhr

I only had a few interactions with Gunther, but I will remember them. Every time we interacted he was calm, helpful and encouraging. I will miss him as a colleague.

Gouri Ginde, 23.04.2023 - 00:40 Uhr

Dear Dr. Ruhe,

I would not have imagined that it was our last meeting in February this year. It would take me forever to talk in the past tense about you. You will be dearly missed, and I am sure you are in a better place now and at peace.

I haven't met anyone as calm, composed, elegant, knowledgeable and caring as you are. The two plants you passed on to me will remain a token of your memory for the longest time. I promise to carry on your passion for education and excellence legacy and try my best to make you proud in every way possible. I will miss you.

Your loving academic daughter, Gouri

Elise Fear, 22.04.2023 - 22:18 Uhr

Saul Greenberg, 22.04.2023 - 05:36 Uhr

Gunther was a colleague of mine in the Dept of Computer Science. Ever the gentleman, ever graceful, and always a calm presence.

Hamid Zareipour, 22.04.2023 - 03:30 Uhr

I am a professor of electrical engineering and had the pleasure of working with Guenther on a few committees. I will remember him as a true gentleman, who was always well-mannered, well-dressed, and had a welcoming smile. I occasionally enjoyed running into him in the hallway or riding together on the elevators, and on all those occasions, he had something positive to say. I am shocked and cannot believe this. My thoughts are with his family. He will be missed dearly around here. A huge loss for our faculty.

Colin Dalton, Calgary, 22.04.2023 - 03:14 Uhr

I knew Günther through work on committees and events at the University of Calgary. He was superb with the students, excellent at research and just a nice person to talk with and be around. He will be missed.

Ann Barcomb, 22.04.2023 - 02:39 Uhr

I met Dr. Ruhe shortly after I moved to Calgary in 2020 after leaving my postdoc position in Erlangen. From the start he was genial, welcoming, and showed good humour. I was co-supervising a graduate student with him and looked forward to his advice for a new faculty member. He will be missed by many of us in Canada. My deepest condolences on your loss.

Marina Gavrilova, 22.04.2023 - 02:22 Uhr

It was a true privilege to know and collaborate with Gunther. He will be deeply missed at the Department. Accept my sincere condolences at this difficult time.
